The game was localized and released in English by NIS America on February 11, 2014.

Cyber Danganronpa VR: The Class Trial^[a] is a free-to-playvirtual reality tech demo in the Danganronpa series, developed and published by Spike Chunsoft for the PlayStation 4 for use with the PlayStation VRvirtual reality headset. It was produced by Yoshinori Terasawa at Spike Chunsoft, who was inspired to create the game after playing Bandai Namco Entertainment's Summer Lesson.

The game was released in Japan in October 2016, and worldwide in March 2017. The game is a tech demo where the player aims to uncover who was behind a murder in a 'class trial' from the first game in the series, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc. It was well received by critics, who enjoyed its visuals.

Gameplay[edit]

Cyber Danganronpa VR is a virtual reality tech demo in which the player plays through the fourth 'class trial' from the adventure gameDanganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, where the player aims to uncover who was behind the murder of Sakura Ogami;^[1] unlike the original game, which uses 2D cutouts for characters, Cyber Danganronpa VR uses 3D models.^[2] The player character's classmates give testimonies, which appear as words; if the player notices something in the testimony that seems suspicious, they can refute the words by shooting them with 'truth bullets'.^[3] To do this, the player needs to turn their head toward the character who testified, and press a button on the DualShock 4 controller.^[1][2] The game takes around ten minutes to play through,^[4] and ends with a first-person sequence where the character Monokuma murders the player.^[2]

Development and release[edit]

Cyber Danganronpa VR was announced and shown at the Animation-Comic-Game Hong Kong fair in July 2015 by Sony Interactive Entertainment, as a tech demo for their virtual reality headsetPlayStation VR.^[5][6] The tech demo was developed by Spike Chunsoft,^[5] and was their first PlayStation 4 project. According to producer Yoshinori Terasawa, he was inspired to create the game by Bandai Namco Entertainment's PlayStation VR title Summer Lesson. The reason for making a game based on Trigger Happy Havoc rather than the spin-off shooting game Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls was that other companies could create virtual reality shooting games, and that the developers wanted to create something that only they could make. Terasawa decided to make the punishment sequence play out from a first-person perspective to make the player feel horror, but also included Monokuma to lighten the mood. To be able to complete the tech demo quickly, the developers made use of the game engineUnreal Engine 4.^[2]

The tech demo was released digitally for the PlayStation 4 on October 13, 2016 in Japan and Hong Kong; it was made available freely for PlayStation Plus subscribers, with no release announced for players without a subscription.^[3][7] The Hong Kong release was made available in English, with English voice overs; Spike Chunsoft announced in October 2016 that they were working towards releasing that version in the West.^[7] It was released in North America on March 7, 2017, and in Europe on March 10.^[8]

Reception[edit]

Hardcore Gamer's Edward Dang was positive to the tech demo, and hoped that it would lead to virtual reality releases of complete Danganronpa games.^[5] Jordan Devore at Destructoid thought that the game did not look exciting based on off-screen footage, but noted that this often is the case for virtual reality games, and thought that it 'could be the start of something neat'.^[6] Chris Carter, also writing for Destructoid, enjoyed the tech demo and called it worth playing, but not something to get excited over due to its short length.^[7] Aki Otsuki at 4Gamer.net recommended the game, and said that experiencing the punishment sequence in virtual reality was horrifying.^[1]Famitsu liked the immersion given by the virtual reality and the 360-degree movements.^[9] Hiroaki Mabuchi at IGN Japan said that the new environment graphics were a great reproduction of their Trigger Happy Havoc counterparts, and that the mysterious atmosphere suited Danganronpa well.^[10]

The hero of our game is a typical high school student with absolutely no remarkable talents or features. Normally, he wouldn't even have a chance at attending Hope's Peak Academy, but thanks to his lucky talent, he was selected from a lottery among average students across the nation, and was invited to enter the school. His only real merit is that he's a little more upbeat and gung-ho than other kids his age.

Aoi Asahina[edit]

Aoi is a very active, alluring girl who loves sports more than anything. She's a member of almost all of her school's sports teams, but she excels at swimming in particular, breaking a number of high school records. She's not a particularly deep thinker, but her upbeat enthusiasm helps keep the others positive during their crisis.

Byakuya Togami[edit]

Byakuya is part of the family in charge of the international mega-conglomerate, the Togami Corporation. As the heir to the family business, he was raised harshly to prepare for his duties. He's full of pride, never bothering to hide his elitist disdain for those around him. He's also the only student trapped in the school who seems to somehow be enjoying their dire situation.

Beneath Celestia's cute lolita-esque appearance lurks a regal beast, with a sharp, wicked tongue. Despite her unusual name, she is in fact from Japan. She's a true genius when it comes to lying, a talent she has applied to the world of gambling. She has sent more than one world-class gambler home broke, and broken. Other than her obvious love of gothic lolita clothes, everything about her is wrapped in a veil of lies.

Junko is a charismatic model who's graced the covers of all the most popular youth fashion magazines. She's naturally outgoing, and she enjoys testing the guys around her with her playfully sexy banter.

Kiyotaka Ishimaru[edit]

Kiyotaka was head of the 'public morals committee' at his old high school, a noted college prep school. Although he is from an extremely ordinary family, he has excelled in his student life. His scholastic ability comes from his dedication to working harder than anyone else, and he has no patience for slackers. Even amid the extreme events at Hope's Peak, he maintains a dedication to the school's rules and regulations.

Kyoko Kirigiri[edit]

Kyoko is the only student at the school whose ultimate ability is totally unknown. She displays a kind of severe beauty, but her past and thoughts are shrouded in mystery. She's reluctant to reveal her feelings, preferring simply to give Makoto hints to push him in the direction of the truth.

Leon Kuwata[edit]

Leon acted as his high school's cleanup hitter during the national baseball championship tournament. Despite his refusal to ever practice, he's got enough natural talent that pro baseball scouts have already started courting him. He can be kind of obnoxious, but it's hard to hate the guy.

Mondo is the head of the biggest biker gang in Japan. He likes to refer to himself as a 'man of mayhem,' but his actions reveal him to be filled with justice and humanity. His professed motto is, 'Actions speak louder than everything.'

Danganronpa 1 Synopsis

Sakura was taught martial arts from a young age by her father, and has become the strongest human being on Earth. They say she learned how to fight before she learned how to walk. Thanks to her stern gaze and taciturn personality, those around her feel intimidated even when she's not doing anything. She shares a love of physical exertion with Aoi, and they quickly become best friends within the school.

But despite spending several years in the same building, they never actually had any direct contact. Still, she becomes the first student at Hope's Peak that Makoto becomes willing to trust.

Toko Fukawa[edit]

Toko is a successful novelist known for her stories about fragile young women. Despite being responsible for multiple best-selling romance novels, in person she's very withdrawn and has trouble relating to other people, often coming off as overly negative and hostile.

Yasuhiro Hagakure[edit]

Yasuhiro apparently has an inherent ability to predict the future through the use of his own intuition. He claims he's right at least 30% of the time, and that to get it right every single time 'isn't fortune-telling - that's just supernatural!' He's been held back a few times because of unspecified woman problems, which makes him the oldest student at Hope's Peak.
